Threaded Wisdom, the works of Bispo do Rosario

Tuesday, 24 January 2012

There appears in the diary of Bispo do Rosario (1911-89) a remarkable phrase; "I am God, and I do not converse with the sick". In the opinion of Wilson Lazaro, the curator of the Museu Bispo do Rosario de Arte Contemporanea, the word "God" as used by Rosario, meant "creation". To-day in the art world, he is indeed considered to be a creator. This is perhaps just one of the keys to understanding the art of this genious, who, for fifty years, interned in the Colonia Juliano Moreira in Rio de Janeiro (currently the Instituto Municipal de Assistência a Saúde), kept his silence, totally absorbed in his work, using materials that came to hand.

On his death in 1989, all of Bispo do Rosario's works became the property of the Museum, and now comprise their principal collection. Currently, the Museum holds exhibitions every six months. The next one is scheduled for March 2012, which will include works by the Polish artist Miroslav Balka and Venezuelan Javier Teles whose works were inspired by Bispo Rosario. It is not only within the Museum Bispo do Rosario that his work is exhibited; this year the collection will be the star attraction at several events. First, in March 2012, at the Centro Cultural Santander in Porto Alegre, under the the title "a Poesia do Fio", "the poem of thread". In August 2012, an exhibition of his works will be shown at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, called "Azul dos Ventos". In September 2012, at the Sao Paulo Bienal Internacional, Bispo Rosario's art will be honoured through the medium of an exhibition of other artists' works using his artistic concepts. In December 2012 a new museum, in Rio de Janeiro, will be inaugurated in his honour.
