Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi. Just look at Belem’s botanical & zoological diversity
This museum, situated in the centre of city, was founded in 1866 by the naturalist Domingos Soares Ferreira Penna, contains a micro universe of the Amazon, and is the centre for the region’s natural environment research. It consists of a zoological / botanical park, an aquarium (the oldest in Brazil, having been created in 1908) and a permanent archaeological and etymology exhibition.

Such beauty in a converted prison!
Within the confines of an old public prison, is housed the Polo Joalheiro, the Casa do Artesão, a museum dedicated to the treasures of Para, indigenous Marajoara and Tapajônica ceramics and artefacts. The specialities of the museum include collections of “design” jewellery which incorporate elements from the tropical forest, such as seeds and fibres, mixed with semi precious stones.

This is a centre for the workshops of the Marajoara and Tapajônico Indians, where they produce their individualistic ceramics.
