Mercado Thales Ferraz - Aracajú - Sergipe

Impressive Bridge
Ponte do Imperador (Emperor’s Bridge). This elaborate bridge and mooring were built in 1860 on the banks of the Rio Sergipe, to serve principally as a berth for the steamship Apa, which brought the Emperor D. Pedro II and his retinue to the then named Province of Sergipe del Rei.

Catedral Metropolitana
This Cathedral is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição, and every year on the 8th of December, the ceremonial “washing of the steps” is performed, followed by a procession of the Patron Saint of Aracaju in the afternoon.

Such beautiful Artwork at Engenho da Terra
Here you will find only the best examples of the Sergipe regional artwork. Images of Saints carved in wood, hammocks, bedspreads, furniture, embroidery, towels, Irish lace collars, shawls and the traditional mandrião, a long, white, fine linen christening robe, bordered with renascence embroidery.

Look at these delightful buildings!
Scattered around the old city centre and along the water front, tucked between modern houses, you will find what are fondly known as the palaces; these buildings have been lovingly restored, to show off their neo classic architecture and serve as important reminders of the city’s European influence.

You must see the riches of Santa Luzia Island!
The Barra dos Coqueiros (coconut palm sand bar), on the Santa Luiza Island is bathed by the sea and river waters, and has recently been connected to the mainland by the modern Ponte Aracaju (Aracaju bridge). On this sand bar, the Sergipana folklore artefacts, embroidery, music and food dishes all reflect the long, rich history of its past inhabitants, Indians, Negro slaves, the Portuguese, French and Dutch.
